Combustors in power and process engineering involve complex interactions of turbulence, chemical reaction, species transport, radiative heat transfer and fuel droplets and particles, which must be resolved over a wide range of scales. The problem is such that HPC is needed to produce sufficient insights - both for providing the data and for analysing it. 

The talk will first present some applied Large-Eddy Simulations of large scale coal boilers, internal combustion engines and shock-tube reactors. These cases will demonstrate that even the latest HPC techniques are insufficient for achieving a suitable level of detail, and that these details must be investigated further. Interestingly, even the investigation of the small scale details is of such complexity that the latest HPC facilities are required - which will be shown in the second part of the talk, for a very detailed simulation of a small, stratified gas flame relying on up to 2^17 processor cores. Besides the application of the HPC technique, the talk will also present the HPC strategy chosen by the group and discuss the reasons for the choice.
